  MARY PHILLIPS
Mezzo-soprano

     Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Mary Phillips has been praised for the beauty of her voice and her sensitivity to the nuances of the text. Her concert highlights include Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the New York Philharmonic and Symphony No. 2 with Atlanta Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and in Beijing during the 2008 Olympics. Her many performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 include with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under James Levine, the Philadelphia Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. This season’s performances include Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky with the Milwaukee Symphony and Bruckner’s Te deum with the Baltimore Symphony. 
     Last season Ms. Phillips appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Schwertleite in Wagner's Ring. She has sung Fricka and Waltraute with Canadian Opera, Erda with Scottish Opera, and Wellgunde and Rossweise with Seattle Opera. Also hailed for her Verdi performances, she sang Eboli in Don Carlo for Canadian Opera and Azucena in Il trovatore at Seattle Opera. She is perhaps best known for her Amneris in Aida, which she will reprise in 2012 with the Hawaii Opera Theatre. Other performances this season include Mrs. Alexander in the Met’s production of Philip Glass’s Satyagraha and her role debut as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde for Dallas Opera.
     Mary Phillips performed with the Oratorio Society of New York in last season’s presentations of Saint-Saëns’ Messe de requiem and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
