| Antonín Dvořák: Stabat mater |
| Chorus & quartet |
|
Stabat mater dolorosa
juxta crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat filius.
Cujus animam genentem,
contristantem et dolentem,
pertransitvit gladius.
O quam tristis et afflicta
fuit illa benedicta
mater unigeniti!
Quae moerebat et dolebat,
piam mater, dum videbat
nati poenas incliti.
|
The grieving mother stood
weeping beside the cross
where her son was hanged.
Her lamenting, anguished,
and aching soul
was pierced through by a sword.
Oh how sad and distressed
was that blessed mother
of the only-begotten son.
How the holy mother mourned and suffered
as she witnessed the pain
of her noble child. |
| Quartet |
|
Quis est homo qui non fleret
Christi matrem si videret
in tanto supplicio?
Quis non posset contristari,
piam matrem contemplari
dolentem cum filio?
Pro peccatis suae gentis
vidit Iesum in tormentis,
et flagellis subditum.
Vidit suum dulcem natum
Moriendo desolatum
Dum emisit spiritum.
|
Who is there who would not weep
to see the mother of Christ
in such torment?
Who would not be moved with grief
to see the holy mother
suffer with her son?
She saw Jesus tortured
and subjected to the lash
for the sins of his people.
She saw her dear child
dying in desolation
until he released his spirit.
|
| Chorus |
|
Eia, Mater, fons amoris
me sentire vim doloris
fac ut tecum lugeam.
|
Come then, Mother, source of love,
make me feel the strength of your sorrow.
Make me mourn with you.
|
| Bass & chorus |
|
Fac ut ardeat cor meum
in amando Christum Deum
ut sibi complaceam.
Sancta Mater, istud agas,
crucifixi fige plagas
cordi meo valide.
|
Make my heart glow with love
for my anointed God,
for thus will it find peace.
Holy Mother, do this for me:
fix the wounds of the cross
firmly in my heart.
|
| Chorus |
|
Tui nati vulnerati,
tam dignati pro me pati
poenas mecum divide.
|
Share with me the pain
of your wounded son,
who suffered so much for me.
|
| Tenor & tenor/bass chorus |
|
Fac me vere tecum flere
Crucifixo condolere,
Donec ego vixero.
Juxta crucem tecum stare,
te libenter sociare
in planctu desidero.
|
Let me weep with you in piety
and suffer the pains of the cross
for as long as I live.
I wish to stand with you
beside the cross
and join willingly in your lamenting.
|
| Chorus |
|
Virgo virginum praeclara
mihi iam non sis amara
fac me tecum plangere.
|
Most excellent of virgins,
it is no longer hard for me.
Make me weep with you.
|
| Soprano & tenor |
|
Fac ut portem Christi mortem
passionis eius sortem,
et plagas recolere.
Fac me plagis vulnerari,
cruce hac inebriari,
ob amorem filii.
|
Make me bear Christ's death,
share his suffering,
and relive his wounds.
Make me suffer his wounds
until I am one with the cross
for love of your son.
|
| Contralto |
|
Inflammatus et accensus
per te, virgo, sim defensus
in die iudicii.
Fac me cruce custodiri
morte Christi praemuniri
confoveri gratia.
|
Amid the fires and flames,
plead my case, Oh Virgin
on the day of judgment.
Let me be shielded by the cross,
protected by the death of Christ,
and cherished by grace.
|
| Quartet & chorus |
|
Quando corpus morietur
fac ut animae donetur
Paradisi gloria. Amen.
|
When my body dies,
let my soul be granted
the glory of Paradise. Amen
